More than my Father’s Name

More than my Father’s Name

a glimpse of his legacy

Midnoon in the crowd
Heard the saddest song that broke my heart
Summer time we drove home
Away to the fading sun in gloom

Five years after your life began
A horse’s strength, sapped and gone
Finished the race, earthly life ends
Returned to dust where life begins

But not without, a valuable legacy
More than your name, is a rich memory
How to be a man, echoed more in the things you said
And a good character, in the deeds you committed

Among others, I shall not forget to mention
Your silent support, to the music of my generation
You bought us a tape, an album of the Hanson
I never thought, you were paying attention

You taught me to play, with your worn out guitar
You showed me D, G and A, and now I’m a rockstar
Your exercise at dawn, with your sweet harmonica
Of timeless classic hymns, were a melodic euphoria

You taught me how, to learn on my own
Find verses in the Bible, and words in a Webster lexicon
Gave me an ’82 Almanac, so much information to scour
Helped me find life’s meaning, and purpose to live for

If only you were here, so I could read you an essay
To greet you face to face, a happy father’s day
Despite raising me, with a discipline so tough and hard
I am forever grateful, God chose you to be my dad
